The psychology of Welsh rugby support
In Autumn 2002, The Prospectory and The University of Glamorgan carried out a joint study of the psychology of Welsh rugby support at the Premier level. The research consisted of:-
A qualitative study based on 7 discussion groups conducted at Newport RFC and Llanelli RFC involving 45 supporters, including children.
A quantitative study based on survey questionnaires distributed at 9 Premier Division home games. ~1000 responses were received.
The research focussed on the psychology of supporter allegiance (how and why people identify with a particular club and the role of rivals in this identification process) and on the psychology of the live match experience (what makes a match compelling).
The following reports present the results and discuss their implications for the future structure of the game:-

The Makeup of Rugby Crowds
The Prospectory has worked with Llanelli Scarlets, one of the 5 new regional sides in Wales, to help understand the commercial and marketing aspects of the transition from club to regional rugby. Through surveys and discussion groups at Llanelli and elsewhere in the region, we and The Scarlets are learning about the nature of live rugby support, and in particular about the makeup of live crowds.
